DC Area Weather Forecast: Brutally Hot and Humid Through Midweek

* Heat warning from 12:00 to 20:00 *

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

2/10: A tough combination of heat and humidity. This gets old fast.

  • Today: Partly to mostly sunny and misty; isolated storms possible. Highs: 94 to 99.
  • This evening: Partly cloudy, muggy. Lows: 73 to 80.
  • Tomorrow: Hot and humid. Chance of storms late in the day. Highs: 95 to 100.

The heat is becoming unbearable and the humidity is back too, after a brief lull yesterday. Heat indices — which take into account both heat and humidity — are expected to exceed 100 every day through Wednesday. We could use some rain and if there is any good news in this week’s forecast, then at times there will be downpours on Thursday and Friday.

Today (Monday): The sun is shining and it’s warming up fast. We’ll likely reach 90 by noon, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s. Add in high humidity (dew points in the low 70s) and it’ll feel like 100 to 105. Our advice will be a frozen record, but remember to hydrate and take breaks if you’re going to be outside for long hours. An isolated pop-up storm can’t be ruled out, but most of us haven’t had any rain. Winds will be light out of the southeast. Confidence: Medium-High

This evening: Outside of the odd evening storm, it will be partly cloudy and muggy overnight. Areas around downtown probably won’t drop below 80 degrees, while our cooler locations will settle into the low to mid 70s. Air conditioners will be working hard. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Tomorrow will be a carbon copy of Monday, except we’ll see a few spots reach 100. Heat indices will peak again around 105. A few storms could develop later, especially east of Interstate 95. Winds will be light out of the south. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow evening: It’s another sultry night with lows around 80 in the city center and 70 elsewhere. Most of us will stay dry. Confidence: Medium-High

The heat and humidity on Wednesday will be similar to Monday and Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 90s and heat indices above 100. There is about a 30 percent chance of some late-day storms as tropical moisture builds over the region, though the remnants of Beryl will likely track well to our northwest. Curvy Wednesday night with lows in the 70s to near 80. Confidence: Medium-High

It’s not that warm Thursday and Friday due to an eroding front and increasing cloud, but humidity will remain oppressive. Showers and storms are possible both days, but they may be most numerous on Friday. There is a chance that some areas will experience heavy rain and flooding. Highs on Thursday will likely be in the low 90s, while Friday could remain in the 80s. Lows will mostly be in the 70s. Confidence: Average

There is a reasonable chance that we will dry out in time for the weekend but it will likely still be very warm, if not hot. Saturday should see temperatures near 90 degrees, while Sunday we could be back in the low to mid 90s. Nighttime lows are typically in the 70s. Confidence: Average
