Two teenagers have died while swimming at Coney Island Beach in New York, police said.

New York City Police received an emergency call for a water rescue in the area of ​​Stillwell Avenue and Boardwalk West at 8:10 p.m. Friday, police said.

Officers arriving at the scene were told that two young women, aged 17 and 18, had fallen into the water and disappeared from view, police said.

Officers from the department’s aviation, port and diving divisions conducted a search. Divers pulled both women from the water, police said.

They were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses told WABC-TV that a rainstorm started and most people on the beach took cover, but the two young women ended up in the choppy water.
