SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) — A wildfire that broke out Sunday afternoon in the Santa Clarita area prompted evacuations.
According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the fire started around 1:20 p.m. near Trumpet Drive and Valle Del Oro.
Residents of The Vistas apartment complex came dangerously close to the explosion, but no injuries were reported and there are no reports of damage to buildings.
An evacuation order was issued for residents in the area, but according to witnesses who spoke to ABC7, many residents stayed behind.
Some say this is the second fire they have seen in the area in the past two days.
“A lot of people, because this has happened so many times, and the firefighters are amazing, they’re really good at putting the fires out, like super fast, a lot of people don’t even leave,” one resident said. “They just stay and wait, unless they physically tell you to leave. We’re actually moving because I’m done with fire season. We’re moving to Rhode Island because I can’t handle the fires anymore.”
The fire was extinguished by the afternoon and evacuation orders were lifted around 5 p.m.
According to residents, fire helicopters dumped water on the flames surrounding the area, quickly extinguishing the fire.
An extreme heat warning is in effect through Sunday evening for the Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas, San Fernando Valley and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
