A large group of people robbed a 76 gas station near Oakland Airport Friday morning, the gas station owner told KTLA and sister station KRON.
The owner of the 76, who identified himself as Sam, said about 40 to 50 people stormed the market connected to the gas station around 4:30 a.m.
Security footage from the gas station shows more and more people browsing the store and taking items from the store.
In an interview, Sam said that a group of people drove a car into the glass of the gas station market. He said that people took everything they could get and destroyed the rest.
When the owner called Oakland police upon arriving on the 76, he was reportedly told to “file a report online.” The owner then attempted to contact OPD Police Chief Floyd Mitchell, but was told he needed to schedule an appointment.
According to OPD, officers responded to a carnival on Hegenberger Road, near the airport, at around 4:30 a.m. There were more than 100 vehicles parked there. About 90 minutes later, police received a call about the 76 robbery.
The report was made after the suspects had left the scene of the crime, prompting the owner to file an online report, OPD said.
“Video evidence was later reported to OPD that revealed the scope and details of the incident, including the large number of suspects, and the incident was immediately elevated to a Priority 1 incident, which resulted in an officer being called to the scene to contact the owner, and investigators are now reviewing the evidence and working directly with the owner of the gas station,” OPD said.
The next morning, according to Sam, workers were on site cleaning up the market.
In February, Texas residents filled up their cars at the same 76 gas stations before being robbed of their belongings.
