4 dead, 3 injured after shooting in Florence

Four people are dead and three others are hospitalized after a mass shooting at a home in northern Kentucky. The suspected shooter also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his car, bringing the total death toll in connection with the incident to five. The suspected shooter has been identified by police as Chase Garvey, 21, of Florence. Florence police say officers responded to a home on Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, Kentucky, at 2:51 a.m. Saturday morning after receiving multiple reports of an active shooter in the home. When they arrived, they heard gunshots still being fired. Upon entering the home, officers said they found seven people suffering from gunshot wounds, four of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a birthday party was taking place at the home of Melissa Parrett, 44, who was throwing the party for her 21-year-old son. Parrett was identified as one of the victims killed in the shooting. The other victims have been identified as: Shane Miller, 20, of Florence, Ky Hayden Rybicki, 20, of Elsmere, Ky Delaney Eary, 19. Burlington, Ky The other three victims were taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. They are currently listed as critical but stable. Police said Garvey fled in a motor vehicle when officers arrived. Officers said they saw the suspect quickly flee near Farmview Drive and U.S. 42 and attempted to pull him over, resulting in a chase. The chase ended on Dale Heimbrock Way near Hicks Pike after the suspect vehicle left the road and went into a ditch. Officers said they found Garvey suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and he was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said their preliminary investigation indicates Garvey was not present at the party and that police believe he came to the home with the sole intent of carrying out a violent attack on the occupants of the home. According to court records, Garvey has two prior felony convictions in Kentucky for first-degree rape and second-degree sodomy, both dating back to 2021. Police confirmed Garvey’s criminal history in their press conference. Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery appeared emotional during Saturday’s press conference. “We’ve never had to deal with this before. We know it happens all over the country, but this is the first time we’ve had a mass shooting in Florence,” he said in an address to the media. Mallery also said officers had responded to the home earlier in the evening for a loud noise complaint that was unrelated to the shooting. The Florence Police Department’s crime scene and investigations units responded to the scene to investigate. Police said there is currently no ongoing threat to the public and said the suspect acted alone.
