2 dead, 17 injured in shooting at Detroit block party

Two people were killed and 17 injured in a shooting at a block party in Detroit early Sunday morning.

Detroit police said a gunman opened fire at 2:25 a.m. at a block party on the city’s east side, NBC affiliate WDIV reported. Michigan State Police also confirmed two fatalities in a statement sent to X on Sunday.

“The Michigan State Police are assisting the Detroit Police Department in a shooting investigation through our partnership on the Homicide Task Force,” state police said.

No suspect is currently in custody, state police said. No additional details have been released about the identity of a potential suspect.

Detroit police said in a statement Sunday afternoon that detectives and forensic teams are “analyzing all available evidence.” Authorities are expected to hold a news conference Monday.

“DPD will implement a new, comprehensive strategy regarding neighborhood parties and will announce full details during a briefing with the police chief and mayor tomorrow,” the police said.
